Confessions of a Shopaholic

Seeing as today is Black Friday, it seems only fitting to post a review of a shopping related movie. Confessions of a Shopaholic is a funny interpretation of the innocent-girl-gets-big-city-job template (a la Devil Wears Prada), and stays true to the genre in every way.

Who's a Shopaholic?

Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher, Wedding Crashers) is a shopaholic. With dozens of credit cards maxxed out and one in the freezer, she dreams of working for a high-fashion magazine and forgetting all of her troubles. Unfortunately, she somehow winds up working for a personal finance magazine, and finds that her troublesome shopping habits allow her a fresh new perspective on the dusty world of banks and bookkeeping.

The plot thickens when her new boss, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), notices her performance and they start spending a lot of time together. The spark is there, but who knows how long Rebecca can keep everyone in the dark about her out-of-control spending?

Laugh It Up

I'm not much of a shopper for items that are not electronic, but I did get a kick out of this movie. The story is uplifting and lighthearted, Jane (Joan Cusack) and Graham Bottomwood (John Goodman) are quite funny, and who doesn't like a cameo or two from John Lithgow (as Edgar West)? The story is well-paced, the performances were well-directed, and this movie was just the type of movie to watch as our American neighours prepared their wallets for 4AM lineups in front of Best Buy. Happy Holidays!

This is an entertaining movie, if you're not averse to the romantic comedy, actionless genre (there are no fistfights in this movie, let alone car chases). See it if you're open to some lighthearted fun.
