Aside from the occasional Family Guy and Seinfeld episode, it's been awhile since I've seen anything that really held my attention on TV. I absolutely loved the first season of HeroesPrime-time Musicals?
Yeah, I know, that's what I thought -- musicals are for Broadway and the occasional movie spoof, right? Wrong. This show is well-cast and well-directed, and has a sense of humour that says that you shouldn't take life too seriously. The show does have its dramatic moments, and those usually lead into song, but that's what you expect from a music-oriented show. Music.
Then there's Jane Lynch (Role Models). She plays Sue Silvester, the power-crazy cheerleading coach, and I can't imagine anyone else playing that role. She's paranoid, insulting, mean, underhanded and conniving -- in short, she's hilarious. Although you may not recognize the rest of the cast, they are all amazing -- not just in terms of singing, but in how they add to the atmosphere. Everyone has a role, and everyone gets a turn in the limelight -- and there's a lot of limelight. Maybe it was just me, but one episode featuring Don't Stop Believing (Journey) made me play it on Rock Band immediately after watching the show. I had no choice.
If you haven't seen the show yet, it airs on Fox on Wednesdays at 9:00 PM, and next week will be the season finale. Don't miss it!
